As we have seen, the comic anecdote and joke in Aghyaran share several formal features, thematic issues, and potential functions in social contexts. There may even be an evolutionary link between the two genres. Where there are differences between the genres—in terms of their status as fiction or nonfiction, the naming or anonymity of characters, or the sensitivity of issues addressed—jokes and anecdotes may draw on each other’s generic features for certain persuasive ends. Despite the conceptual connections between joke cycles about stereotypical Irishmen and comic anecdotes about Aghyaran locals, John’s joke above reminds us that not all Aghyaran jokes necessarily deal with issues of local or group identity. Furthermore, unlike John’s joke, not all Aghyaran jokes are potential commentary on social problems, tensions, or anxieties. Some are told simply for their entertainment value and the humorous shock of incongruity. Yet even in these cases where jokes seem to deviate from anecdotes by portraying unknown people for no particular persuasive end, jokes may gesture back to the comic anecdote.
